History
The UCLA Experience
Cradled in rolling green hills five miles from the Pacific ocean, UCLA
is surrounded by affluent residential neighborhoods, the bustling
activities of Westwood Village and the conveniences of one of America's
most dynamic cities.
UCLA is distinguished as the only campus among the nation's top 10
research universities that was established in the 20th century.
Dedicated to the missions of teaching, research and public service, UCLA
has earned a worldwide reputation for the excellence of its programs and
the achievements of its students and faculty.
UCLA students comprise some of the nation's most outstanding scholastic
achievers. The diversity of the student body, unmatched at any other
major university, reflects a wide variety of cultures and nationalities.
In athletics, UCLA teams are respected for their excellence, admired for
their talent and lauded for their victorious results. Encouraged to
excel in the classroom, UCLA student-athletes are rewarded frequently
with post-graduate scholarships and academic All-America laurels.
In academics and athletics there exists no better combination than the
opportunities offered at UCLA.
The Legacy of UCLA's Jackie Robinson
The first African-American to play major league baseball (April 15,
1947). Born Jan. 31, 1919 in Cairo, GA.
His widow Rachel, a UCLA alumna, founded the Jackie Robinson Foundation,
which has funded college scholarships for deserving African-American
students.
The first four-sport letterman in UCLA history -- football (1939 and
1940), basketball (1940 and 1941), track and field (1940) and baseball
(1940).
Lyrics to Bruin Spirit Songs
Sons of Westwood
We are Sons of Westwood
And we hail the blue and gold;
True to thee our hearts will be
Our love will not grow old.
Bruins roam the hills of Westwood
By the blue Pacific shore;
And when they chance to see
Their team near victory
Every Bruin starts to roar:
U-C-L-A, UCLA fight fight fight!
The Mighty Bruins
We are the Mighty Bruins,
the best team in the West,
we're marching on to victory,
to conquer all the rest.
We are the Mighty Bruins,
triumphant evermore,
and you can hear, from far and near, the Mighty Bruin roar!
U rah rah rah rah! C rah rah rah rah!
L rah rah rah rah! A rah rah rah rah!
UCLA FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT!
Hail to the Hills of Westwood
Hail to the Hills of Westwood,
to the mighty sea below,
Hail to our Alma Mater,
she will conquer ev'ry foe,
for we're loyal to the Southland,
her honor we'll uphold,
we'll gladly give our hearts to thee,
to the Blue and to the Gold.
